A general statutory minimum wage was introduced to protect workers in Germany from unreasonably low wages. The statutory minimum wage also contributes to fair and effective competition. At the same time it ensures greater stability in Germany’s social security systems.
At the time of its introduction on 1 January 2015, the minimum wage was 8.50 euros gross per hour. Since that point in time, it has been increased several times. On 26 June 2023, the independent Minimum Wage Commission adopted a resolution for the period from 1 January 2024. The Federal Government has implemented this resolution in a binding manner for all employers and employees. Since 1 January 2025, a minimum wage of 12.82 euros per hour applies.
